Handball – Groener should stay – Sport

About a week before the start of the World Cup in Japan, the German Handball Federation wants to extend the contract with the coach of the women's national team.

The German Handball Federation (DHB) would like to extend the contract with women's national coach Henk Groener even before the beginning of November World Cup prematurely. That was decided by the presidium, "because we are convinced of his work," said DHB President Andreas Michelmann on Saturday night in Hannover after the 32:23 friendly win against Croatia. The current contract of the 59-year-old Dutchman runs until 31 August 2020. "Of course, I am pleased about the trust," said Groener. "I think the talks will be completed successfully." Groener trains the DHB selection since the beginning of 2018. At the World Cup in Japan, which begins for the German women on 30 November with the opening match against Brazil, at least the seventh place should be achieved. This would entitle to participate in the qualifying tournament for the Olympics. "We need a top performance with the squad to achieve the goals we set for ourselves," said Groener, referring to the tournament.
