The French department has voted for exceptional aid for beekeeping, hit hard by the spring frost.
The frost that occurred in the spring damaged the production of honey in Haute-Savoie. According to the department, it has fallen by 80% of the 20,000 beehives in the territory. The cold weather had a second consequence: beekeepers were prevented from building up sufficient reserves to allow the bees to feed themselves during the winter. To save the colonies from certain death, 300 tons of sugar transformed into syrup are needed. On Monday, the Departmental Council therefore voted for emergency aid of 250,000 euros for the sector, in order to finance the purchase of this food. A supplement will also be paid in spring 2022.
