Having 10 or more sexual partners raises the risk of cancer

-

Having a history of 10 or more sexual partners is related to an increased risk of being diagnosed with cancer. It is revealed by research published in “BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health” which ensures that, in addition, in the case of women, the number of sexual partners is also associated with other chronic diseases throughout their lives.

Researchers at the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (United Kingdom) have analyzed the potential impact of the number of sexual partners on chronic diseases. Thus, they resorted to the information collected for the English Longitudinal Study on Aging, a follow-up analysis of people over 50 years.

During the 2012-13 period, participants responded to a questionnaire about the number of sexual partners they had. A total of 5,722 of the 7,079 people answered: 2,537 men and 3,185 women. The answers were classified according to their sexual partners: 0-1; 2-4; 5-9; and 10 or more sexual partners.

People who reported having had a greater number of sexual partners were also more likely to smoke, drink frequently and perform more intense physical activity weekly.

In addition, participants were asked to rate their own health status and report any long-term illness that would affect their routine activity in some way.

Information about their age was also obtained; ethnicity, marital status, income, lifestyle and presence of depressive symptoms.

About 28.5% of men said they had 0-1 sexual partners to date; 29% between 2-4; one in five claimed to have had 5-9; while 22% reported 10 or more. The figures, in women, were: less than 41% between 0-1; 35.5% between 2-4; less than 16% had 5-9; and less than 8% more than 10.

People who reported having had a greater number of sexual partners were also more likely to smoke, drink frequently and perform more intense physical activity weekly.

When all the data were analyzed, a statistically significant association emerged between the number of sexual partners and the risk of a cancer diagnosis between both sexes.

Thus, compared to women who said they had 0 or 1 sexual partners, those who claimed they had 10 or more, were 91% more likely to have been diagnosed with cancer.

In men, those who reported 2 to 4 sex partners were 57% more likely to have been diagnosed with cancer than those who reported 0 to 1. And those who had 10 or more, had 69% more Probability of having been diagnosed with a tumor.

Although this is an observational study and, as such, cannot establish the cause, the findings coincide with those of previous studies.
Inquiring about the number of sexual partners could complement existing cancer screening programs by helping to identify people at higher risk

But, in addition, in the case of women, those who had had 5-9 or more than 10 sexual partners were 64% more likely to have a chronic limiting disease than those who said they had 0-1.

Although it is an observational study and, as such, cannot establish the cause, the findings coincide with those of previous studies, which associate sexually transmitted infections in the development of various types of cancer and hepatitis.

The researchers suggest that inquiring about the number of sexual partners could complement existing cancer screening programs by helping to identify people at higher risk.

However, experts do not have an explanation about gender difference in the risk of long-term diseases. .
