Dresden (dpa / sn) – corneas, blood vessels and heart valves: Saxony was one of the federal states with the highest number of tissue donations in 2021. 317 donations came from the Free State, as the German Society for Tissue Transplantation (DGFG) announced on Saturday. According to the information, there were a total of 2897 tissue donations across Germany, with which more than 7000 patients were cared for. From a regional perspective, according to the DGFG, donations were only higher in North Rhine-Westphalia and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania than in the Free State.

In the University Clinic Dresden, which is a partner of the DGFG, 66 people donated tissue after their death. 68 percent of all potential donors were out of the question for medical reasons such as a corona infection.

Unlike organ donations, tissue donations are independent of brain death diagnostics. Heart valves and vessels can be removed up to 36 hours after death, and corneas even up to 72 hours later.
