In a sample of 552 older men and women aged 63 to 84, the researchers found that less than half slept in total darkness for five hours a day, while the rest were exposed to some light. Although in cross-sectional studies, it is impossible to pinpoint whether light is the cause of the development of these diseases, it is true that some people turn on the lights in the middle of the night, such as to use the bathroom, or have other reasons to keep the room bright, or even have numb feet due to diabetes of patients may wish to keep the lights bright at night to reduce the risk of falls.

Phyllis Zee, director of sleep medicine, said it was important for people to avoid or minimize the amount of light during sleep. And provides 3 methods to reduce light during sleep:

●Do not turn on the lights in the room. If it is for the safety of the elderly, it is recommended to set it to a dim light closer to the floor.

●Light color is very important. Yellow light is less stimulating to the brain, do not use white or blue light, and keep these lights away from people who are sleeping.

●If you can’t control the outdoor light, you can try to use the sunshade, or move the position of the bed so that the light does not shine directly on your face.
