Heavy damage and at least six deaths in US from tropical storm Isaias | NOW

Hurricane Isaias claimed at least six lives in the United States on Tuesday. Isaias has since weakened into a tropical storm.

Isaias made landfall in the south of the US state of North Carolina and then moved north along the east coast towards the states of New Jersey and New York.

In North Carolina, two caravan camp residents died from a tornado that devastated the entire camp.

Three people were killed by fallen trees. Someone was also pulled by a flood. In Queens, New York, a dead man fell on a car through a fallen tree. Several people were temporarily missing.

Corona test sites closed as a precaution

The hurricane weakened over land to a tropical storm. Still, Isaias still caused a lot of damage. About 2.8 million homes and businesses from North Carolina to New York were temporarily without power. On Tuesday afternoon, according to North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, there were still 172,000 homes in the state without power.

As a precaution, corona test sites were temporarily closed in New York State.

Isaias has now left the US and the storm is sweeping across southern Canada. Cooper reports that US President Donald Trump has offered his help.
