“Her great fear was that she would die and her son be left alone”

On Wednesday afternoon, three people lost their lives in a terrible road accident in Middelkerke. The victims’ car collided head-on with a truck.

According to information from the Nieuwsblad, the three victims are members of the same family: Jacques Michaux, 77, his partner Andrea Moris, 74, and her 57-year-old son. “Andrea’s son had Down syndrome. Her great fear was that she would die and he would be left alone,” testified the victim’s granddaughter.

For reasons still unknown, Jacques, who was driving the Suzuki Swift, veered off the road. But the vehicle, without brakes, collided head-on with a truck coming from opposite. Despite the truck driver immediately braking, the tragedy could not be avoided.

Jacques had heart problems and it is possible that he felt unwell at the wheel, indicate our colleagues.

Jacques and Andrea did not live together, but they spent all their days together, with Andrea’s handicapped son, Erwin. That day, “they had gone to eat ice cream” and get some fresh air by the sea. “They really liked going to the sea with Erwin because he came to rest there. He liked the sea air,” says Andrea’s granddaughter.
