The numbers of the day

Most of the indicators linked to the Covid-19 pandemic in Belgium continue to decline, with the exception of the daily number of deaths, according to figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, there were 3,658 people hospitalized in Belgium due to Covid or having contracted the virus (-16% compared to the previous week), including 381 in intensive care (-13%).

Between February 8 and February 14, there were an average of 259.3 daily hospital admissions due to Covid, down 24% from the previous reporting period.

Between February 5 and 11, 15,635 new Sars-CoV-2 contaminations were detected on average per day, down 46% from the previous week. The incidence, which provides the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 2,704 over 14 days.

Over the same period, 44.3 people died per day on average while they were carrying the virus (+8%), bringing the death toll to 29,724 since the start of the pandemic in Belgium.

Some 56,600 tests on average were also carried out daily, for a positivity rate of nearly 32%.

The reproduction rate of the virus is 0.83. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down.

The Omicron variant accounts for nearly 90% of cases in Belgium.
