Cholesterol is a raw material necessary for the human body. Every cell in the body needs cholesterol because, as an important component of the cell membrane, it is involved in the formation of certain hormones and the maintenance of nerve functions. If there is an excess of cholesterol in the blood and vessel walls, serious damage to health can result from vascular calcification. This increases the risk of a stroke or heart attack. However, high cholesterol levels often go unnoticed by those affected for a very long time. However, if an excess of cholesterol has existed for years, various symptoms can eventually appear.
High cholesterol: Six physical symptoms can be signs
Most of the cholesterol needs are met by the body itself, while the smaller part comes from food. The cholesterol is then transported from the liver to the cells via the blood. A distinction is made between LDL and HDL cholesterol: In contrast to HDL cholesterol, the former is called the “bad” cholesterol. Because this is deposited in the vessels and thus increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases – while the “good” HDL cholesterol even helps to transport excess LDL cholesterol away.
If the LDL cholesterol levels are elevated, those affected usually show no pain or symptoms at first. However, skin changes on the arms, legs, buttocks and eyelids can be a warning sign. Accordingly, elevated cholesterol levels can often be seen on the face. If cholesterol levels are elevated over a long period of time, the following physical symptoms may occur that should not be ignored:
- tightness in the chest
- shortness of breath
- disturbances of consciousness
- aching legs

Prevent high cholesterol levels: healthy lifestyle, little alcohol, not overweight
In order to prevent high cholesterol levels and not to let them develop in the first place, you should maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes one balanced nutrition and avoiding obesity. In addition, you should only consume a little alcohol and, above all, do endurance sports such as swimming, cycling or Nordic walking. Smokers are also advised to quit smoking.
