The SRT (Super Rapid Train) train departing from Busan and heading for Suseo Station derailed near Daejeon Train Station. As a result, seven people were slightly injured and treated at the hospital. The accident delayed the operation of high-speed trains, affecting the feet of citizens who use trains on weekends.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, SR, KORAIL (Korail Corporation), etc., at around 3:21 pm on the 1st, the first car of the SRT No. 338 train bound for Suseo from Busan and the last motor car will be operated by Daejeon. I left the railroad track near Daejeon Station.

Eleven people were injured in the accident, seven of whom were treated at the hospital, but fortunately they were not seriously injured. The rest of the passengers walked to a nearby station and then changed to a bus.

The cause of the derailment is the overhang of the rail due to the intense heat. The hot rail expanded and the track was distorted, and the train that ran without noticing this was derailed.

In fact, he confirmed that a part of the rail near the derailment site was distorted. On that day, the temperature in the Daejeon area was over 30 degrees Celsius, and the sun was strong at one point.

At Daejeon Train Station, where the accident occurred, the container freight train that was leaving Busan New Port and heading for Sapgyo Station derailed on June 24, 2018 (around 3:23 pm). The accident at that time was also considered to be caused by the deformation of the rail due to the intense heat.

However, one railroad official said, “In general, you can think of overhangs, but it is doubtful that overhangs will occur in the heat of about half a day after it rained yesterday.”

For this reason, it is difficult to rule out the possibility that there was another abnormality in the track instead of the overhang, or that the rail was bent in the process of derailing due to a defect in the train.

After the accident, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism dispatched a railway safety inspector and an accident investigation team to the site, and KORAIL also put in an emergency response team and a hoist to start restoration work. Track maintenance Maintenance and maintenance of SRT trains are handled by KORAIL. Korail expects recovery to take some time.

It is expected that the process of towing the accident train and restoring the track will be completed on the morning of the 2nd. The SR side utilizes a part of the down line to pass a two-way train, and KORAIL makes a general line run a high-speed train on the up line.

Because of this, the trains on the up line are not a little delayed, and many of these trains are scheduled to be put on the down line again, so the trains on the down line are also delayed one after another. It takes about 50 minutes-1 hour longer than usual to arrive at Seoul Station from Daejeon on a general railroad track instead of a high-speed railroad track. A KORAIL official said, “It is expected that it will take some time to recover from the accident and normalize the operation of high-speed trains, so please use another means of transportation as much as possible.”
