Because Amou Haji, who is already 87 years old on his back, has not bathed for 67 years but defies all medical precepts by enjoying excellent health. Specialists are puzzled.
Yes, the last time Haji took a bath, Elvis was recording his first album; in Mexico the 5-peso silver coins were withdrawn: the Vietnam War had not yet started; Germany remained divided and the Berlin Wall continued to shame the human race; and an almost infinite etc.
Haji, who is from Dejgah, a small town in Iran’s Fars province, has lived his entire life on the streets. In 2014, he got his 15 minutes when a local outlet published his story and sold him as the “dirtiest man in the world.”
The photos and videos of the man’s disastrous appearance, living in extremely poor conditions, toured social networks. No one, it was the certainty at the time (and always), can live like this for a long time.
However, now, a team of scientists contacted the man. who continues to live in the same conditions, and subjected him to a thorough medical analysis. The Haji’s good health shocked them.
The team of doctors, which was led by Associate Professor of Parasitology Dr. Gholamreza Molavi of the Tehran School of Public Health, visited Haji and convinced him to allow him to run some tests.
Medical examinations included tests for various forms of hepatitis and AIDS, as well as parasites. The doctors were almost certain to find something like this.
Dr. Molavi and his team were particularly interested in finding and studying parasites and bacteria that might have developed in his unwashed body.
However, to everyone’s surprise, the specialists did not find any disease-causing bacteria or parasites, with the exception of Trichinosis, an infection that, in his case, seemed to produce no symptoms.
The discovery was particularly shocking considering the 87-year-old regularly consumes raw roadkill animals such as porcupines and rabbits, drinks dirty water from puddles using rusty unwashed cans, and reportedly smokes dried animal feces if he doesn’t have tobacco for his pipe.
Dr. Gholamreza Molavi believes that the only logical explanation for the test results is that Amou Haji has developed an enormously strong immune system over decades of living in extremely harsh conditions.
But despite his good health, Haji is despised by his “neighbors” in town. Many make fun of him and even physically abuse him.
The local governor appealed to the people to leave him alone, saying that despite his appearance, he was a gentle soul who never hurt anyone.
