HIV testing operation in Saint-Martin

Gradually, the population is starting to use HIV testing again, but without yet reaching the level of 2019. For two years, the Covid-crisis has eclipsed other diseases. The challenge now is to remember that the fight against sexually transmitted diseases remains topical. The example in Saint-Martin.

The number of people affected by HIV in Saint-Martin is estimated at around 350. The “human immunodeficiency virus” is very present, on both sides of the Franco-Dutch border, since a little less than 1% of the population is concerned, on the whole of the island; a relatively high rate.

As part of World AIDS Day, health actors on the ground have mobilized to inform the population about this disease and encourage everyone to get tested. A specific device has been set up, for the occasion, in the reception hall of the “Louis Constant Fleming” hospital center in Marigot. But the operation that did not attract many people, unfortunately. However, to stop the progression of AIDS, screening is essential.

Those who made the trip, realized, with astonishment for some, that the screening consists of only a small prick at the end of a finger. This is the case of the artist Swe Booker, who did not hesitate to come and reassure himself about his viral status. It was obvious to her:

Being a child of the 80s, I was really sensitized, very early on, to wearing a condom, all that! So it’s important to me. I saw that it was free, I was invited to get tested, so I did it: I do it willingly.

Reducing the virus also depends on the existence, on the territory, of appropriate prevention and care structures. This is the case, says infectious disease specialist Dr François Bussuel.

During the Covid crisis, the number of screenings had dropped considerably. A trend that is now reversing. However, sexually transmitted diseases have gained ground lately, including in Saint-Martin.

Since 2022, we have again seen an increase in HIV testing. And we noted, initially, a considerable increase, not of HIV but of other sexually transmitted infections, which shows that there is a reduction in prevention and, in particular, in the use of condoms.

A message to convey, within the population, so that it reconnects with good gestures and contributes to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
