Honoring Alex in Starfield: A Community’s Heartfelt Request to Bethesda

Fans of Starfield, Bethesda’s highly anticipated space RPG, have issued an emotional request to the game publisher. They want Bethesda to honor a player who died before they had a chance to experience the game. emerged on social media after some fans pledged to name their ships Starfield in honor of the late player.

A touching story

Back in March, Alex Hay took to Reddit to express his disappointment after Starfield’s release date was announced. He revealed that he had recently stopped treatment for lung cancer and was in hospice care. Alex, who had been following the development of Starfield for years, had hoped that he could have this experience before succumbing to his illness, but he estimated that to hold until September 6, release date of the game, was unlikely. Before passing away at the age of 35, Alex asked future players to enjoy the game on his behalf.

Some members of the community then started asking Bethesda to create a tribute to Alex in Starfield. So far, those calls have been limited to a small Twitter campaign using the hashtag #AlexInStarfield, launched in mid-May. While these efforts have yet to make the rounds, Bethesda YouTuber Light recently reported that the studio is already aware of Alex’s story. Additionally, Light shared on Twitter that the developers are “probably” considering honoring the late fan in Starfield, citing unnamed sources.

With just months to go, it’s unclear if the initial Starfield release could include a tribute to Alex. Even minor additions to a complex game like a AAA-grade open-world RPG take time to implement. Therefore, immortalizing Alex in Starfield could be considered for a future game update, provided Bethesda completes this project.

It’s worth pointing out that Bethesda has paid tribute to players who have passed away in the past. In 2016, in the Nuka World DLC for Fallout 4, the ZeniMax-owned studio commemorated a fan’s brother. Bethesda also gifted this fan with a variety of collectibles and sent a personalized letter from the developers expressing their condolences.

The Bethesda community is known to be very receptive to these kinds of touching stories. Fallout 76 players have already shown their sensibilities in a moving in-game moment. In the past, Bethesda fans have also campaigned for The Elder Scrolls 6 to include a tribute to Colton “Colt” Meredith, an Skyrim fan who passed away in 2020.

Starfield will be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 6, 2023. It will also be accessible upon release via Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass.
