Hospital admissions continue to rise, deaths are declining

Between February 21 and 27, an average of 143.7 people were admitted to hospital with COVID-19 every day, representing a 20 percent increase over the previous seven-day period. This is evident from the final figures from health institute Sciensano on Sunday.

According to the most recent figures, a total of 1,841 people are now in hospital (+17 percent), of whom 399 (+27 percent) are in need of intensive care. Between February 21 and 27, 1,006 lab-confirmed COVID-19 patients were hospitalized and 837 left the hospital.

Between 18 and 24 February, an average of 2,401 new infections were diagnosed daily, an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous week. In total, 769,414 infections have already been registered in our country since the start of the pandemic.

During the same period from 18 to 24 February, an average of 39,630.7 tests were administered daily, an increase of 1 percent compared to the previous period. The positivity ratio rises again slightly to 6.8 percent. The reproduction number is also on the rise and now stands at 1.15, which means that the epidemic is still increasing in strength.

Just like in previous days, the number of deaths is still going in the right direction. Between 18 and 24 February, an average of 25 people died every day, a decrease of 33.3 percent. The counter in our country now stands at 22,052 COVID-19 deaths.

In the meantime, 484,601 Belgians have received a first dose of the vaccine, which corresponds to 4.2 percent of the total population. Some 305,732 fellow countrymen have also been given a second shot and are therefore fully vaccinated, accounting for 2.7 percent of the population.
