Politico CEO Goli Sheikholeslami announced at the WAN-IFRA World News Media Congress in Marseille that the media organization is accelerating its shift toward specialized, data-driven professional intelligence to counter the rise of AI-generated content. By prioritizing original reporting and integrating journalism directly into the workflows of policy and investment professionals, the company aims to position itself as a provider of “scarce” trusted intelligence rather than generic information.
Expanding the professional subscription model
Politico’s business strategy, which relies on professional subscriptions for more than 60 percent of its revenue, is expanding to capture new market segments. Originating in 2011 with the launch of its coverage of the Affordable Care Act, the model was designed to translate complex regulatory shifts for lobbyists, pharmaceutical executives, and government officials in real time. Following the successful application of this framework to the European Union’s institutions in 2015, the organization has scaled its operations to include bureaus in Washington, Brussels, London, Paris, Berlin, Sacramento, New York, and Ottawa. Plans are currently underway to establish new outposts in Madrid and Canberra later this year.
According to Sheikholeslami, the organization is now pivoting to serve investment professionals who require immediate, actionable signals derived from deep political reporting. The goal is to deliver editorial content directly into the internal research systems and AI-assisted tools used by portfolio managers, effectively treating journalism as a primary data stream for market decision-making.
The premium on human-led intelligence
Sheikholeslami identified three central pillars for Politico’s growth in an automated digital landscape: the increasing value of original, verified reporting; the potential to reach new audiences through agentic AI tools; and the rising demand for in-person human connection. She argued that as the internet becomes saturated with AI-generated text, the most significant scarce resource for decision-makers will be trust.
While the firm is embedding technology into its newsroom to assist its staff, Sheikholeslami emphasized that the core product remains human-verified intelligence. The organization continues to view its journalism not merely as content, but as a utility. This philosophy extends to its events business, including the “Politico Pub” series, which the company uses to convene key stakeholders on the sidelines of major global events. The CEO characterized these live formats as essential to the business model rather than a secondary activity, noting that they serve to reinforce editorial authority and audience loyalty simultaneously.
Technological integration in the newsroom
Unlike organizations that sequester AI development in isolated labs, Politico is integrating its technological initiatives directly into the daily operations of its reporting and editorial teams. The company is pairing its human editorial investment with tools intended to streamline the delivery of information. This approach is framed as a strategic response to the shifting geopolitical environment, where trade policies, such as U.S. tariff announcements, create immediate ripple effects across global markets. For the firm, the ability to synthesize these reactions across multiple capitals provides a distinct competitive advantage for subscribers whose business profitability is tied to government policy.
