How to connect the Nintendo Switch to a TV?

If the Switch works by default as a portable console, in the tradition of Nintendo stars such as the GameBoy and the DS, it can also be connected to a television. It is the docking station that is used for this operation…

You probably know, the Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console. It works by default in portable mode, with its own screen. However, it is possible to connect it to a television in order to benefit from a much higher image quality.

When you acquired your Switch, you got a small box called the Dock or docking station in the box, which you can use to store the console upright.

It is this box that will be used to connect the console to the television.

Docking station connections

  • the very first step is to open the lid of this docking station;
  • connect the Nintendo Switch charger interface to the socket labeled AC Adapter on the docking station;
  • connect the HDMI cable to the interface of the docking station marked HDMI OUT;
  • arrange these two wires so that they come out through the opening provided for this purpose. You can now close the docking station cover;
  • the charger must of course be plugged into a mains socket. The HDMI interface must be connected to one of the ports to this your TV or flat screen.

Detach the joysticks from the console screen

Now you need to remove the Joy-Con controllers located on the left and right of the console by sliding them upwards.

Please note: when you are going to use the console with a display on a television, the Switch must recognize them in “wireless” mode. If ever the controllers were already disconnected from the console, you would first have to reconnect them to the Switch and then remove them.

Insert the console into its docking station

You can now sandwich the console into its docking station with the touchscreen facing you. The top of the console will protrude slightly.

Turn on the Switch if necessary — the touchscreen is automatically turned off when inserted into the docking station.

If your TV is on and already set to display the HDMI input used for the Switch, the image from the console immediately appears on the big screen. Failing that, choose the HDMI output that receives the signal from the Switch on the TV.

Once you have connected the docking station of the Switch to the TV, you can insert the console or remove it at will. Every time you slide the console into its docking station, its image is almost instantly displayed on the TV.

You can now play Switch while holding both controllers in each hand.

However, if you plan to play permanently with the Switch connected to the television, it is advisable to buy a dedicated controller such as those offered by Nintendo, SPGood or Nyxi, which will offer much better gaming comfort and will allow you to benefit from vibrations at the way of a traditional joystick.
