HRW lawyer criticizes lack of international condemnation of human rights violations. H H. in Cuba

The Argentine lawyer Juan Pappier, researcher of Human Rights Watch for the Americas Division, criticized the lack of a uniform condemnation of human rights violations in Cuba, which makes Miguel Diaz-Canel get away with it.

“I think that thanks to this dysfunctional response from the international community, Diaz-Canel is getting away with it,” Pappier said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper. ABC.

For the expert on topics related to Cuba, the regime uses the North American embargo in its favor, which serves as an excuse to show the world as a victim.

“Until now, the international community’s response to Cuba has been dysfunctional. On the one hand, there is the US embargo, which creates a huge distraction, because allows Cuba to show itself as a victim, when in fact they are responsible for major violations of DD. H H. And, on the other hand, we have a policy of European Union that condemns the embargo, that sometimes has strong voices in relation to Cuba, but they are not consistent,” he pointed out.

Pappier criticized the UN High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, for maintaining a “quite weak” position with respect to Cuba and recalled that he spoke on the issue of human rights on the island only once.

That is why he considers that the communist regime takes advantage of this lack of international consensus to get away with it and repress its citizens without being questioned.

“[Al gobierno cubano] he does not care about the condemnation of some actors, but I think that the condemnation of the EU, of Bachelet and of center-left governments in Latin America does matter to him“, he sentenced.

The words of the Argentine lawyer occur shortly after the NGO presented its Annual Report 2022, where Cuba was included as one of the countries where human rights are violated.

“The Cuban government continues to repress and punish virtually any form of dissent and public criticism. In turn, Cubans continue to suffer a severe economic crisis that impacts their social and economic rights“, says the text of the report, which emphasized its analysis of the vulnerability of human rights after the 11J protests.

Juan Pappier, At HRW, he has conducted research and written reports on abuses related to armed conflict, repression against protesters, and attacks against the rule of law, among other issues.
