MHundreds of Muslims in Wetzlar visited an unusual place to celebrate the festive season at the end of Ramadan. Corona-related, they came together instead of in a mosque in the large parking lot of the Ikea furniture store in the city of Central Hesse. A photo of the faithful sitting or kneeling on prayer rugs with a corona safety distance also made the rounds on the Internet.
One was surprised by the attention, said Kadir Terzi, the leader of the Islamic Community Millî Görüs (IGMG) in Wetzlar on Wednesday. They are pleased with the largely positive feedback. The meeting was already on Sunday.
Because of the corona restrictions, praying with so many people in a mosque was not possible. According to Terzi, the IGMG and the Turkish mosque association Ditib Wetzlar were looking for a solution – which was found in the neighboring Ikea parking lot. According to his estimates, around 700 people eventually came together outdoors. The requirements included a distance of two meters from each other.
You see yourself as a “good neighbor,” said an Ikea spokeswoman. And since there was a hygiene concept, the furniture store manager gave the green light for the request from the mosque associations. According to the city, a hygiene concept had been submitted, but did not have to be specially approved. According to the regulatory office, the requirements were met.
