Argentine Court Upholds Convictions in Soccer Player’s Homicide

BUENOS AIRES – the Supreme Court of Justice of Buenos Aires Province has ratified the convictions of Nahuel Oviedo Betancourt, a former Hurricane soccer player, and his accomplice, Ever Augusto Brizuela Cáceres, in the 2018 homicide of facundo Espíndola, a former Almagro goalkeeper. Oviedo Betancourt will serve a 14-year prison sentence, while Brizuela Cáceres is sentenced to 12 years. The crime occurred outside a bar in Hurlingham.

Court Rejects Appeals from Both Sides
The court dismissed appeals from both the victim’s parents, who sought increased sentences, and the accused’s defense, which aimed to reduce them.This decision upholds the previous rulings by chamber II of the Criminal Cassation Court and Toc N° 5 of Morón, which initially heard the case.
The Fatal Confrontation
The incident that led to Facundo Espíndola’s death occurred around 6:45 a.m. on July 22, 2018. According to court records, Espíndola and his friends had an argument with Brizuela Cáceres, who was in a white Peugeot 308.
the verbal exchange escalated when Oviedo Betancourt joined the confrontation and struck Espíndola. Brizuela then retrieved a 25-centimeter knife from his car trunk and handed it to Oviedo Betancourt.
