[땡큐뉴스 / 이근우 기자] Ryu Hyun-jin (34, Toronto Blue Jays) started as a starter, but left a disappointment.
Toronto recorded 5 hits (1 homer), 1 walk, 3 strikeouts and 3 runs in 6 innings in a match against the Chicago White Sox in the 2021 season held at Guaranteed Late Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA on the 11th (Korean time). It increased slightly from 3.23 to 3.34.
After one shot in the first inning, Ryu Hyun-Jin had a problem after allowing a double to Hermin Mercedes. He caught Joan Moncada fly to center field, but allowed an early start by a double to Jose Abreu at second base and then a two-run homer to Yasmani Grandal.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who had a whopping 3 runs in the first inning, did not allow any more runs from the 2nd to the 6th innings. Among 95 pitches, strikes were the most with 57 and cutters with 33, and he threw 26 changeups, 20 four-seam fastballs, 15 curves, and one sinker.
The Toronto batters contributed to Ryu Hyun-jin by scoring one goal each in the 5th and 6th innings, but in the end they could not even turn the game around. Hyunjin Ryu went down the mound in the 7th and Anthony Castro hit a solo home run. The game leaned more towards the Chicago White Sox.
Even with ace Hyun-jin Ryu on the mound, Toronto lost 2-5. After the game, manager Charlie Montoyo said: “He did what he had to do. Not all balls were sharp, but they played well enough.”
On the other hand, manager Montoyo expressed his disappointment that Gurriel Jr. did not catch the ball during defense in the first inning.
