Hyundai Motor Collaborates with Saudi Aramco to Develop Environmentally Friendly Engine and Fuel

SEOUL, March 30 (Yonhap) — Hyundai Motor Group said Wednesday it is cooperating with Saudi Aramco and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to develop an environmentally friendly engine and fuel.

The previous day, Hyundai, Aramco and KAUST held a signing ceremony for a joint research cooperation agreement to develop an environmentally friendly engine and fuel.

The joint research will continue for two years, utilizing Hyundai Group’s environmentally friendly internal combustion engine technologies and advanced fuel design technologies from Aramco.

KAUST is providing support for this development in its research workforce and facilities, creating synergistic effects in research performance through modeling and validation in engine and other tests. Tests will take place at the Clean Combustion Research Center at KAUST.

Environmentally friendly internal combustion engine technologies improve fuel efficiency and effectively reduce greenhouse gases.

Hyundai said this joint research aims to develop technologies for a natural transition to carbon neutrality by sharply reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels in the transition period in which electric and internal combustion engine cars coexist.

Hyundai Motor Group executive vice president, Alan Raposo, said the ultimate goal in carbon-neutral transportation is a shift to all-battery electric vehicles, but the need for technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions is growing.

Creating more efficient and less polluting transportation systems contributes critically to the circular carbon economy approach to addressing the climate crisis, said Professor Donal Bradley, Vice President for Research at KAUST.

He added that the center will conduct joint research with its outstanding record in developing and improving low carbon fuels.
