Hyundai Motor Company participates in North America’s largest hydrogen industry event, ‘Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Seminar’

[월간수소경제 박상우 기자] Hyundai Motor Company has set out to lay the foundation for the North American hydrogen commercial vehicle market by seeking opportunities to expand the hydrogen business to US federal departments and global hydrogen companies at the largest hydrogen industry seminar in North America.

Hyundai Motor Company announced that it participated in the ‘2023 Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Seminar (HFCS)’ held at the Long Beach Convention Center in California, USA from February 7 to 9.

The ‘Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Seminar’ is the largest hydrogen industry-related event in North America with a history of more than 40 years, hosted by the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association (FCHEA) and supported by the US government.

In particular, Korea was selected as the host country for the seminar for the first time this year, and had opportunities such as installing a PR booth dedicated to the event period, holding a special session for the guest country, and holding a ‘Korea-US Hydrogen Public-Public Roundtable’.

Hyundai Motor Company attended the ‘Korea-US Hydrogen Public-Private Roundtable’ held on the 8th to strengthen partnerships with various hydrogen-related organizations, including the US Department of Energy, the Department of Commerce, and the California State Government, and to discuss technology with various local companies throughout the hydrogen value chain. Both sides sought ways to cooperate, such as development, to create synergies.

In addition, he inquired about incentive policies in the field of clean energy, such as hydrogen, and emphasized the need for support from the US government for the expansion of hydrogen commercial vehicle demonstration projects and the supply of fuel cells.

At the ‘Special Guest Country Session’ held on the 9th, Hyundai Motor Company introduced the ‘California Port Eco-Friendly Truck Introduction Demonstration Project’, which supplies 30 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks to the Port of Oakland, USA, and conducted a hydrogen commercial vehicle demonstration project to other state governments. offered to participate.

In September of last year, Hyundai Motor Company was finally selected in the air pollution reduction program ‘TAG (Targeted Airshed Grants)’ contest hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and in the second half of this year, it replaced the existing hydrogen transport diesel truck of US FirstElement Fuel (FEF). It is going to supply 5 Hal Xcient hydrogen electric trucks.

During the event, Hyundai Motor Company exhibited the North American Xcient hydrogen electric truck tractor in the Korean public relations hall and had time to introduce the ‘Waste-to-energy Hydrogen Production Concept’. The North American Xcient hydrogen electric truck tractor is equipped with a 180kW fuel cell system and a drive motor with a maximum output of 350kW, and can travel up to 720km by charging 68kg of hydrogen at a time.

Hyundai Motor Company’s ‘Resource Recycling Hydrogen Production Concept’ uses biogas extracted from organic waste such as food waste, livestock manure, and sewage sludge to build a waste energy hydrogen production system and apply it to various fields such as transportation, industry, buildings, and power generation. The plan is to promote the development of a clean hydrogen ecosystem. Hyundai Motor Group is currently carrying out demonstration projects in Chungju, etc. in Korea, and is considering expanding overseas, such as China and the United States.

Furthermore, Hyundai Motor Group is reviewing a hydrogen energy business model that integrates the entire hydrogen value chain, such as future reforming/capture (CCUS), storage and transportation, supply and utilization, as well as clean hydrogen production through the ‘resource recycling hydrogen production concept’. .
