“What I am going to ask you, I think you have spoken about it once, or perhaps you have not spoken about it, but it has to do with a situation that happened many years ago, where a person runs into you when you are driving. This is a very powerful story and I think it marked you”started saying Martín Cárcamo.
Lucho Jara told the story and said: “I was coming down Santa María Avenue, when the highways obviously didn’t exist. It was in August 1986 at six in the afternoon. I’ve always been pretty cautious about driving, I don’t know if you noticed. At that time I didn’t drink alcohol either, I didn’t even smoke, I was 20 years old, I was an old guy.”.
“I was going down and, suddenly, a drunk homeless man appears in front of me, obviously drunk and in my inexperience as a driver I try to avoid running him over, but it was impossible. The man was staggering and I had no chance of moving anywhere, so I hit him head-on and he falls on the windshield. I see his face and he falls to the ground, hits the cement and I get off. I put the handbrake, obviously the impact was tremendous on the street and on me,” he continued.
“The first thing I do is ask him what his name is to see if he was conscious, the man was very drunk. The police arrived and I was involved in a tremendously dramatic situation. They took me into custody, they did a blood test and took me to the police station. My parents arrived and I spent the night there. They took me to a court and put me in a kind of dungeon, I saw my family outside. I couldn’t get out,” she added.
“A police officer who was my classmate in kindergarten stopped me, this was on a Friday. On Tuesday I was going to represent Chile in Colombia, at a festival. And then I said “cag… the festival, cag… my life”, was blocked. I spent three days in prison, while they investigated. I was in a common cell, I had a bad time, I suffered a lot and I was alone without communicating with my family “he added.

When they released him, Lucho Jara left the place and could not speak, he had lost his voice. “My parents were devastated and I went to Colombia without a voice. But at the airport, I met a colleague who told me that the gentleman I ran over had died, and I died at that moment. I went all the way crying, I I felt like a criminal without being one, since later it was said that I had no responsibility, but I didn’t understand it that way”he mentioned.
“Two months later, the gentleman’s brother appeared and told me not to feel guilty, but it had an impact on me for a long time, it was a life, it didn’t have to happen and it happened. It taught me a lot, it helped me see life clearer, that things happen and happen. From that moment I matured “ended.
