After years of sadness in midfield, “King Ibra” finally wakes up big title dreams at AC Milan. “Of course we can become champions. If you believe in it, anything is possible ”said double goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the prestigious 2-1 (2-1) in the Milan derby against city rivals Inter on Saturday. “The hunger is very great.” With four wins from four games, the 18-time Italian champions are at the top of the Serie A table.
“Ibra is the King”, was the headline of the “Gazzetta dello Sport” on Sunday. Despite his 39 years of age, the Swedish star decided the game and increased his quota to four goals in two games this Serie A season. “His character contribution is fundamental. He is an exemplary professional, a competitive type who always gives everything ”, coach Stefano Pioli praised the Swede, who did not allow himself to be slowed down by a corona infection and the quarantine, which only ended a week ago. “They locked me up at home like an animal for two weeks. An animal in a cage ”said the old star.
After the game, he published a photo of a lion with a bloody mouth on Instagram and wrote just one word: “Hunger”. Ibrahimovic decided the derby with his goals after a penalty, which Inter-keeper Samir Handanovic initially saved (13th minute), and a perfect play (16th). The hit by Romelu Lukaku (29th) was too little for Inter, and the dress rehearsal for the duel with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the “premier class” failed.
Ibrahimovic, who also played for Inter from 2006 to 2009, scored his ninth goal in the Milan derby for both clubs. “I’m not amazed at myself, I know what I can do”the striker commented on his brace. “If I had been in this condition by the age of 20 or 30, no one would have stopped me, but they don’t stop me now either.”
Fifth was the best result in Serie A for Milan in the past seven years. Ten years after the last Scudetto 2010/11, fans are now finally dreaming of more – even if they could not follow the derby victory live in the stadium due to the corona pandemic. Coach Pioli doesn’t want to hear about the fans’ dreams yet: “I don’t want to take away anyone’s enthusiasm or euphoria, but we’re only at the beginning of the season”he warned.
