Idukki dam opened; Discharges 50 cubic feet of water per second

Idukki: Idukki dam opened after rising water level. A shutter of Churuthoni dam is opened and 50 cubic feet of water per second is released into Periyar. The water was released by raising the shutter 70 meters. The shutter was raised after the water level reached 2384.10 meters.

At the same time, Minister Roshi Augustine said that there is no need to worry about the opening of the dam. The minister informed that only a small amount of water that can be stored in Edamalayar will be released.

As the water level in Mullaperiyar dam has also risen, alert has been issued to those on the banks of Periyar. In connection with the opening of the dam, alert has been issued in five villages. The minister had also said that the water level will not rise in Periyar. However, caution has been issued along the coast of Periyar.

The water level has also risen in Idamalayar dam. The water level has crossed 162 meters. An orange alert has been announced in Edamalayar. If it rises by half a meter, a red alert will be announced at 6 pm today.

A notice has been given to 79 families to be relocated in case of emergency. The District Collector informed that 29 camps have been set up for this purpose.

A red alert has been declared in the Banasura Sagar reservoir as the water level has reached 773.50 meters. If it rises by half a meter, the current upper rule level of the reservoir will reach 774 meters. In this case, the shutters are likely to open after 12 noon today. Excess water will flow into the Karaman stream. 8.5 cubic meters to 35 cubic meters of water per second will have to be released in stages. Officials informed that the water level in the river may rise by 10 to 15 cm, so people should be cautious.

The water level in Mullaperiyar dam reached 138 feet. As the water level crossed the rule curve limit, the shutters of the dam were opened earlier. 2219 cubic feet of water per second flows into Periyar. Tamil Nadu is carrying 2166 cubic feet of water. There is also a possibility that more water will be released in the background of not reducing the flow of water to the dam.
