Drivers in the state of Illinois can apply for a duplicate or replacement driver’s license if the document has been stolen, lost, or in poor condition.. This type of request is also recommended when the driver’s personal information has changed —address changes or name changes— to ensure that it continues to be valid.

Drivers whose license has been suspended or revoked cannot apply for a replacement or duplicate until the suspension time is over and they have resolved their situation with the authorities.

How to get a duplicate driver’s license in Illinois?

According to the Illinois Secretary of State (ILSOS), the agency in charge of granting driving privileges, in order to apply for a duplicate in person, drivers must go to one of their local offices and be eligible according to their criteria:

1. You want to obtain a duplicate instruction permit or commercial learner’s permit.
2. You want to obtain a duplicate temporary visitor driver’s license, homeless identification card, or driver’s license indicating it is valid without a photo or signature.
3. Your driver’s license or identification card expires within the next 30 days.
4. You previously changed your address online or by mail.
5. You have a driver’s license or identification card from another state.
6. You have obtained 3 duplicate driver’s licenses in the last 12 months.
7. You have obtained 3 duplicate IDs in the last 12 months, or a total of 10 in your entire life.
8. Your driver license or identification card must be mailed to a temporary address.
8. You must make any changes to your driver’s license or identification card.
9. Your driver license or ID card was issued before August 1, 2016.

Although this process is usually carried out in person, can also be completed online, which is the most convenient way to do it. When done this way, ILSOS will send the document to the mailing address of the corresponding driver within a maximum of 15 business days. To apply online, interested drivers need only access the driver’s license section of the official website of the Secretary of State (ILSOS) and complete the online form following the prompts of the system.

The process of requesting duplicates online also requires the driver to meet certain eligibility criteria:

1. Your driving privileges must not be suspended, revoked, canceled or disqualified.
2. You should not owe a reinstatement fee.
3. The information you provide must match the information on your current DL/ID record.
4. Your driver license or identification card was issued on or after August 1, 2016.
5. You must have a valid Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card.
