Immense and controversial Verdaguer

-

Among the editorial novelties planned for this confinement Sant Jordi, there are two books that address the figure of Jacint Verdaguer from two very different perspectives. It could well be said that, if it were not for the fact that the protagonist is the same, the two books have nothing to do with it. Are Fills of the hard ground, from Daniel Palomeras (Comanegra), and Between l’infern and la glòria, from Àlvar Valls (1984 editions).

The first has 200 pages; the second has more than 1,000. The first is a literary recreation, almost cinematographic, from some episodes of Verdaguer’s life; the second is a great biography of the character, who tries to be true to facts and history, documented in the more than 5,000 studies, articles and analyzes that have been made of the writer and priest, and of his work.

FILLS DE LA TERRA DURA

Daniel Palomeras (Santa Maria d’Oló, 1949) is a doctor, now retired, and has published works for both youth and adults. The author of Fills of the hard ground He says that this character had never been raised, but that in 2007, talking to Narcís Garolera, one of the reference scholars of Verdaguer’s work, encouraged him to make a cinematographic biography.

Palomeras wrote a couple of chapters in a possible series, “but the crisis of 2008-2009 took everything ahead.” Now he’s back: “I have turned it into a novel, which is not intended to be neither a biography, nor a literary thesis, nor a eulogy from Verdaguer. I wanted to express in my own voice what that man suggested to me, ”says Palomeras.

“It is not intended to be a biography, or a literary thesis, or a eulogy,” says Daniel Palomeras

Disappointed in the audiovisual world for its complexity, he says he feels “more comfortable making novels than scripts.” The chapters are varied and do not follow the chronological order: “They are scenes, with some flashbacks. I try not to dominate the biographical component, but the dramatic ”.

Don’t shy away from controversial figure: “He was a romantic, a romantic priest, and he builds an extraordinary work, but at the wrong time. He writes on topics that have been written in western literature for 300 years. ”

How doctor, He has not used medical terminology or points hypotheses about the character’s health status: “He was stubborn, yes; I had a strong, uncompromising temperament. ”

In the novel they contrast the episodes that speak of contemporary works of art and other references from the newspapers of the time: “It is a scenographic point of view. I liked using paintings and environments of the time, so that they are the ones who paint the scenery for us. They explain it much better than I could explain. ”

BETWEEN L’INFERN I LA GLÒRIA

The writer, translator and political activist Àlvar Valls (Barcelona, 1947) addresses Between l’infern and la glòria the last 18 days of Verdaguer, sick with tuberculosis, in Vil·la Joana.

“The book is based on all the incidents that happened in those days. Verdaguer was in the hands of two groups of friends facing each other: some around the Lliga, and the others were republicans and some freemasons. In fact, he came to issue two wills, one in favor of each group, ”explains the author.

“Everything comes from the nineties of the XIX century, when the bishop takes away the power to say mass. Your articles
‘In self defense’
they are the beginning of modern journalism, as Zola was in France three years later ”, Valls reasons.

“His articles‘ In Self Defense ’are the beginning of modern journalism”, assures Àlvar Valls

The author confesses that fifteen years ago someone “inoculated him Verdaguer virus” He realized that “a complete bibliography was missing, although there were partial ones; mine already has more than 5,000 tickets ”. This research is what he has combined with the writing of the book, “structured in the 18 chapters of the last 18 days, from which 64 episodes hang”.

“Verdaguer was a character very fickle, he believed everything, he had good faith but it was not a memo ”, he details. “The narrator is a trujiman of Verdaguer because he is a very conflictive character and they made him go crazy.”

Valls considers that “that wound is still open“And he has tried to find a balance:” I have tried to be a true player based on his letters. ” The author, who has been working with the language since 1964, has done a commendable job regarding dialect accents, prose, poetry and theater included in the book: “It is structured like a symphony. I wanted it to be a tribute to Verdaguer, that’s why it is a quiet narration, stendhaliana, critics would say, “he concludes.
