Splitting a festival into two editions, one, reduced and professional, the other, extended and general public, it was necessary to think about it, in these times of health crisis. ” No one else has had this approach, it’s starting to worry us … », Ironically Franck Bondoux, general delegate of the Angoulême International Comics Festival.
On the occasion of the presentation of the official selection of albums in the running for the Golden Fauve, he clarified the contours, still unclear, of these two Angoumois events. The first, which will be held on January 29 and 30, will allow a small group to inaugurate the exhibition dedicated to Emmanuel Guibert (Ariol, Alan’s war), grand prix of the festival in 2020 and, as such, president of this 48e somewhat special edition. It will be open for six months.
« It is an exhibition that I wanted to open to a group of friends, from all artistic backgrounds: painters, sculptors, photographers », Explains Emmanuel Guibert in the video presentation of the festival.
Benoît Peeters, president of the jury
At the end of these two days reserved for professionals and the press, Covid obliges, the prize list will be unveiled by the jury chaired this year by Benoît Peeters, eminent specialist in comics, writer and screenwriter of many albums (especially those of the co-written series with François Schuiten, The Dark Cities).
The Grand Prix of the city of Angoulême must however only be announced in a second event, from June 24 to 27, during which exhibitions, events and meetings with authors will be held, ” as far as possible », Specifies Franck Bondoux. The programming, still under development, will not be that initially imagined for the festival, if it had been able to be held normally, but it should be more oriented towards the general public.
« For weeks that have been months, we have done, we undo, we wonder. We have designed events that can realistically be brought to a close in today’s environment. But our objective is the same: to be at the service of comics, as the Cannes Film Festival is to that of cinema., underlines the general delegate. As readers cannot stroll through their bookstores, the selection of 70 albums, then the list, make it possible to promote works less known to the general public so that they can acquire them in click and collect ».
