In Morlaix, the APBL calls for better protection of all Langolvas wood – Morlaix

In June 2022, the Association for the protection of the Bois de Langolvas (APBL), in Morlaix, opposed the plan for the purchase and deforestation of a 5,000 m2 plot by the Genêts d’or for an extension of their buildings of the Esat, on this part of the municipal wood which it has managed since 1993.

The APBL, which denounced “an inconceivable attack on the environment in a period of climate change”, had carried out an awareness-raising action in July. Then launched a petition at the end of August asking for the classification of the plot BR 0147, constructible but unused for 42 years, in “protected area, wooded area to be preserved”, like the rest of the wood.

More than 1,000 signatories to the petition

Where is the file? On March 20, 2023, Jean-Claude Le Saux and Isabelle Le Hen, co-presidents of the association, Alain Lourdeau, ex-co-president and active member, Martine Maupassant, treasurer, and Maryvonne Calcine, secretary, took stock, with a preamble a “thank you to the more than 1,000 signatories of the petition

».

“After our letter of September 26, 2022 asking the town hall of Morlaix and Morlaix community to classify the threatened plot as a “classified wooded area”, we received, on November 17, an austere but positive response from Morlaix Co”, summarizes Jean -Claude LeSaux. [NDLR. L’enquête publique devrait démarrer cette année]The agglomeration, which has the competence for natural spaces, says “take note of the inability to find a compromise solution” and that it “will seek with the Esat another land”, he explains. “Consequently, the BR 0147 plot will be subject to a zoning modification within the framework of the next PLUi-H”, is it specified in the answer.

By protecting this wood, we think first of our children and the well-being of future generations.

Application extended to all wood

“It’s a satisfaction, but it’s not enough” considers the APBL, “disappointed by the lack of frank adhesion of Morlaix Co to the environmental stakes of the public wood of Langolvas. While the Department plans to plant 500,000 trees in Finistère, this wood located on the ridge line which supplies the Jarlot watershed on one side and the Dourduff watershed on the other, could be part of a more global ecological project”, suggests the association, which intends to go further “to preserve the last natural spaces of the municipality, the only guarantors of the maintenance and development of biodiversity”.

In mid-January, the APBL therefore
The defenders of the Langolvas wood, where there are two protected species (a fern, the royal fern; and an amphibian, the salamander) would like all of the public woods to be classified as a “Classified wooded area”.

A movement for the return to a primary forest in Europe

The APBL has also decided to join the Association of Francis Hallé, this French botanist, an ardent defender of trees, who wishes to revive a primary forest in Western Europe. “It was obvious, says Alain Lourdeau, since this is what we have been doing since 1989 in the Langolvas wood, left in natural self-management with minimal maintenance of the area around the path. »

“In Morlaix, there are few green spots, apart from the Ty Dour valley, an urbanized green corridor, or the Château garden… adds Martine Maupassant. By protecting this wood, we think first of our children and the well-being of future generations. “The opportunity for the association, with 61 members and around thirty sympathizers, to call on young people to join its ranks to bring life and resistance to this small wood, “the last natural space in the city… and accessible to all ! »

The Langolvas wood protection association has chosen a minimum maintenance of the wood (maintenance of the surroundings of the path that goes around it) which is voluntarily left in natural self-management.
