In seven years, video games have become Sony’s central pillar

To say that the launch of the PlayStation 5 is strategic for Sony is not an empty word. In 2013, when the PlayStation 4 was released, video games and its 8 billion euros in turnover only represented 12% of the Japanese group’s income. Seven years later, the situation is quite different. In the first half of 2020, video game activities accounted for a third of the group’s turnover. Better yet: almost half of Sony‘s profits came from its PlayStation branch.

Of course, the face of Sony has changed since 2013. The Japanese have abandoned the computer market. It suffers from Korean and Chinese competition in the smartphone and television markets. But its PlayStation branch has grown rapidly during this period.
