In Tetla, grandmother Nahui teaches traditional medicine

Tetla, Tlax. Women over the years have developed knowledge to select, grow and use medicinal plants; that have served for the advancement of herbalism and medicine in our country. Thus, they have contributed to the quality of life of rural domestic groups and to the care of natural resources.

The practices traditional medicinal among the Tlaxcalans they are observed when they go to healers for various reasons. Either because they do not have the necessary financial resources to see a doctor or because precisely this doctor could not satisfy the needs of the patient; or, because they flatly consider that to remedy their condition it is necessary to go to a healer.

The gift

The peoples ascribed to traditional medicine recognize that a person is conformed by a duality; that is, a corporeal part and a spiritual part. Some indigenous belief systems consider that the spirit resides in the heart, others think that it can be equated with the thought or the mind.

They all say that the necessary techniques have been inherited from their ancestors, either from a relative who passed on their knowledge before dying or also because God has taught them, since they say that it is he who helps them to heal their sick. Most traditional therapists are seniors and have been practicing their work for more than 50 or 60 years.

The new generations

We sat down to talk to Giselle Leon young Tlaxcalteca, who for 4 years approached this traditional knowledge. Upon leaving university, he did his undergraduate thesis called The use of the temazcal an ethnopsychological approach.

«It was when in search of the person who would provide me with information, I found Guadalupe Corona, better known as grandmother, in Tetla de la Solidaridad Nahui Ollin, who teaches me the use of the temazcal and some medicinal plants as well as some other knowledge. »

Although she has only recently been in the field of traditional medicine, she considers herself a healer; But there is still much to learn since this ancestral knowledge is acquired from generation to generation, from experience, from the knowledge they have about plants and their connection with nature. For her, traditional medicine is:

“A knowledge transmitted to us by people who have walked, experienced and connected with nature, to heal and heal our different bodies that we inhabit”

He mentions that unfortunately the use of plants in a medicinal way is currently being lost. But in the state, it is still common in the communities at the foot of Matlalcueyetl, San Pablo del Monte, San Pedro Tlalcuapan, San Francisco Tetlanohcan, Contla de Juan Cuamatzi, San Bartolomé Cuahuixmatlac, Ixtenco, to name a few.

“On the slopes of Matlalcueyetl or some other mountain where nature abounds, native and wild plants and with it the memory of the grandparents using them from generation to generation to heal.”

State medicinal herb

The medicinal plant is one that contains one or more active ingredients capable of preventing, alleviating or curing diseases, and is valued for the use of some of its chemical substances in medicines.

In Tlaxcala, there is the Tizatlán Botanical Garden where 49 medicinal species of 200 collected in the state are studied. In the state, the geographical characteristics of different municipalities influence the type of flora that predominates and the plants present.

Among the limitations of traditional medicine is that people prefer to go to the doctor and take medication to quickly get rid of the discomfort they have; however, says Giselle, they do not take into account that to achieve a healthy body you also need healthy habits and emotions, and that this does not have scientific support.
