Indonesia is embarking on a grand vision – to relocate its bustling capital from Jakarta, a megacity grappling with sinking land and overwhelming population density, to a brand-new city named Nusantara, nestled in the heart of Borneo.
President Prabowo Subianto has made a meaningful investment commitment to this aspiring endeavor, allocating 48.8 trillion rupiah (roughly $2.99 billion) for Nusantara’s progress through 2029. This massive undertaking signifies Indonesia’s determination to secure a lasting and prosperous future for its growing nation.

Indonesia’s Bold Vision: Building a New Capital in Nusantara
Indonesia is embarking on a monumental journey – relocating its capital from the bustling metropolis of Jakarta to the planned city of Nusantara, nestled in the heart of Borneo. This ambitious project, envisioned by former President Joko Widodo, aims to revitalize indonesia’s infrastructure, balance development, and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
The decision to move the capital wasn’t taken lightly. jakarta, plagued by traffic congestion, pollution, and rising sea levels, presented significant challenges. Nusantara, situated 1,200 kilometers away, offers a fresh start. While the initial construction phase was delayed due to the global pandemic, Indonesia’s commitment to the project remains unwavering.
Between 2022 and 2024, Widodo’s administration invested a substantial 75.8 trillion rupiah into Nusantara, laying the foundation for this ambitious city.
Nusantara is more then just a relocation; it’s a symbol of Indonesia’s forward-thinking vision. Government officials are eager to attract both public and private investment to fuel Nusantara’s growth. malaysian company Citadel Group, for example, is poised to invest 6.5 trillion rupiah in a diverse range of projects, including hotels, housing, and office buildings.
“it’s a privilege and an immense obligation,” says Basuki Hadimuljono, the Chief of the Nusantara Authority. “Indonesia’s shift to Nusantara will reshape our nation, and I’m honored to play a part in it.”
As Nusantara takes shape, the focus has shifted from foundational infrastructure to developing residential areas and government buildings. “After completing the initial infrastructure, we’re now focusing on housing and office buildings, specifically for parliament and the judiciary,” explains Hadimuljono. “Most executive branch offices are already in place. Townhouses, apartment blocks, and commercial spaces are set to follow suit.”
President Prabowo, mindful of the project’s scale, is taking a balanced approach. “President Prabowo is taking a balanced approach, acknowledging risks and,” notes hadimuljono, hinting at a strategic roadmap that carefully weighs potential challenges.
The success of Nusantara hinges on its ability to become a thriving, sustainable city – a beacon of progress for Indonesia.
