A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits the island of Java
An earthquake hit the Indonesian island on Saturday, two weeks after the one that claimed the lives of 330 people.
A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Java, Indonesia on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). Another earthquake killed more than 320 people there two weeks ago.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 112.5 km 18 km southeast of the city of Banjar in West Java.
The Indonesian meteorological agency for its part evaluated the magnitude of this earthquake at 6.4, which shook buildings in the capital Jakarta. No casualties or major damage were reported at first.
“Ring of Fire”
On November 21, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake at shallow depths near the town of Cianjur, also in West Java, killed at least 331 people. The quake had destroyed many buildings and caused deadly landslides.
Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates meet, Indonesia regularly experiences earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
