According to the office, this is the first time that the Dutch inflation rate has exceeded 10% since September 1975, attributing the rise from 8.6% in June to energy costs and an increase in housing rents, which usually rise in July.

The bureau reported that the cost of food also rose by 12.3% year-on-year.

Last week, the Central Statistical Office said that inflation, when calculated according to the European system which uses a different basket of goods to calculate inflation and does not include, for example, housing rentals, was 11.6%.
