“The objective is to highlight the injustice of the status of cohabitant experienced by more than 500,000 people in our country”, explains the collective in a press release on Monday. “Withdrawing a substantial part of income from people who already have to live on very little is unfair and inhumane,” he points out.
The members of the collective believe that replacement income “are rights that living with other people cannot taint”.
In view of the May 2024 elections, activists are calling on political parties to abolish the status of cohabitant so that everyone is declared as “isolated” or as “head of family”.
The status of cohabitant, not to be confused with legal cohabitation which confers legal protection on two people living together, refers to the fact that the situation of the household is taken into account in the calculation of replacement allowances (CPAS, unemployment, disability…). Thus, the social integration income (CPAS) of a cohabiting person will be less than that of an isolated individual or a person with a dependent family.
