The intensive care area and the emergency room in the Asklepios Klinikum Uckermark in Schwedt have a new “colleague”, the UVD robot is affectionately called “Uwe”. The robot irradiates the environment with high-energy UVC radiation and kills bacteria and viruses on the surfaces and in the air. The special highlight: The robot drives completely independently and autonomously.

“Uwe” is used for infectious diseases, especially airborne pathogens such as the coronavirus. The robot is requested via a tablet and drives independently to the appropriate room. An employee makes sure that no one is present and then lets the robot into the room. After the door is closed, the fully automatic cleaning process begins. If the door is opened during the process, this is registered and the robot pauses the further process. After disinfection, “Uwe” drives back to his charging station. The room can then be used directly by the next patient. The whole process takes about eight minutes in a normal room.

Up to now, corresponding rooms have been disinfected by misting with chemicals. However, this process is more risky and time consuming. With 12,000 operating hours, the bulbs are very durable and last five years on average. The plastic housing of the devices does not suffer from radiation exposure either. Therefore, “Uwe” not only convinces with its permanent willingness to prepare a contaminated room for a patient at any time, but also with its sustainability.
