IPL 2022 | Kovid threat; Next season’s IPL may be played in Maharashtra only

Mumbai: The rising number of Kovid cases in the country is affecting sports as well. The IPL is under threat after the Ranji Trophy, the domestic cricket tournament, and the I-League, the football league, were postponed due to the crisis created by Kovid’s expansion. The BCCI is planning to hold the IPL in India despite the expansion of Kovid. As part of this, the BCCI is planning to hold this year’s IPL 2022 in Maharashtra only.

In Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai, Kovid cases are being reported on a large scale, but the government has allowed sports competitions to be held under strict conditions. In view of this, the BCCI is planning to hold the IPL entirely in Maharashtra. The BCCI plans to hold the IPL at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium near Pune. The BCCI is preparing a ‘Plan B’ as a precaution in case the Kovid expansion goes out of control.

BCCI CEO Hemang Amin had yesterday contacted Mumbai Cricket Association president Vijay Patil to find out whether stadiums in Mumbai would be available for the IPL. This was during a meeting of the Mumbai Cricket Association. Later, Amin and Patil met NCP president Sharad Pawar and asked for his opinion. He has accepted the BCCI’s proposal, “the Times of India quoted BCCI sources as saying.

In a few days, Hemang Amin and Vijay Patil will meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Chief Secretary Debashish Chakraborty to discuss the matter. It is hoped that the government’s approval will not be difficult as the matches will be played without strict fan restrictions with strict bio-bubble restrictions. The players and officials participating in the tournament will be subjected to regular Kovid inspections, ”the report said.

Although the IPL is played at home and away, the BCCI plans to increase the number of Kovid cases to a limited number of venues.

When the tournament is limited to three stadiums in Mumbai and one in Pune, the biggest advantage is that the teams can control their travels. There was also an assessment that the Kovid cases reported among team members were due to team trips to various stadiums, despite strict bio-bubble restrictions last season.
