Iran admits to shooting down Ukrainian plane

Spectacular flip-flop, three days after the Ukrainian Airlines plane crash: Iran apologized on Saturday January 11 for shooting down the Boeing 737 by ” fault “, while pointing out the responsibility of the“American adventurism” in this drama.

Ukraine Airlines International (PSU) flight PS752 crashed early Wednesday west of Tehran, soon after takeoff. The victims are mainly Iranian-Canadians, but also Afghans, British, Swedes and Ukrainians.

“Regrettable error”

“The internal investigation of the armed forces concluded that regrettably missiles launched in error caused the crash of the Ukrainian plane and the death of 176 innocent people”, recognized Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Saturday 11 January. Iran regrets “Deeply” this crash, “A great tragedy and an unforgivable error”.

Earlier, the Iranian foreign minister had already expressed “Regrets, apologies and condolences”, while stressing that Washington was no stranger to this drama. A “Human error in times of crisis caused by American adventurism has led to disaster”said Mohammad Javad Zarif.

” Crisis situation “

He was referring to the tension over the Jan. 3 elimination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a drone fire in Baghdad, on the orders of President Donald Trump, which had resulted in Iranian missile strikes on bases housing American soldiers in Iraq.

“In a crisis and sensitive situation, Ukrainian flight 752 took off from Imam Khomeiny airport, and when we turned,” he would have seemed to get closer “Of a sensitive military center” of the Guardians of the Revolution, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, according to their press release, published by the official agency Irna.

The Iranian armed forces explained that the aircraft was then taken for a “Hostile plane”. ” The manager “ of this error is going to be translated ” at once “ in court, said the staff.

Questioned version

Tehran had previously categorically denied the theory, favored by several countries, including Canada, that the Ukrainian plane was hit by a missile. “One thing is certain, this plane was not hit by a missile”, the president of the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization (CAO), Ali Abedzadeh, said on Friday.

The Iranian version was, however, widely questioned. A 20-second video showing the moment when a missile hits the device has been widely distributed on social media. You can see a luminous object climbing rapidly to the sky and striking what appears to be an airplane.

As early as Thursday, January 9, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was not an accident. “We have information from multiple sources” who “Indicate that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile”, he said. “It may not have been intentional”.

Following Iranian announcements acknowledging their responsibility, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the punishment of the culprits and the payment of compensation. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau demanded “Transparency” so that a “Full and thorough investigation” be conducted.
