TEHRAN, Dec. 30, 2021 (Xinhua) Iran on Thursday announced the successful launch of a home-made rocket carrying research equipment into space.

The official IRNA news agency quoted Iranian Defense Ministry spokesman Seyed Ahmad Hosseini as saying that the intended research objectives of the mission were achieved, without specifying when the Simorgh (Phoenix) missile was launched, or what equipment it carried.

He explained that the space center that launched the missile worked flawlessly, adding that the launch stages of the carrier went as planned.

Hosseini said that for the first time, three research equipment were launched simultaneously at an altitude of 470 kilometers at a speed of 7,350 meters per second during the mission.

The liquid-fueled Simorgh missile was first successfully launched from Iran’s Imam Khomeini Space Center in 2017.

The United States has long expressed skepticism that Iran’s satellite launch vehicles are part of a larger Iranian effort to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but the latter has repeatedly said that its nuclear program is peaceful and insists that its launch of missiles and satellites is not for any military purpose.

The launch came after the resumption of Iran nuclear deal talks, which entered the eighth round on Monday, to revive the 2015 nuclear deal that the United States withdrew from in 2018.

Iran and the parties to the agreement have been holding talks in the Austrian capital Vienna since last April, without success so far in breaking the deadlock.
