Iranian President Hassan Rohani on Wednesday threatened the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for having signed agreements to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. Specifically, he warned that “they will be responsible for the consequences” of the decision.

How could they have reached out to Israel? And then they want to give them bases in the region? You will be responsible for all serious consequencesRohani declared in a televised speech.

The president of the Persian regime, who did not directly name the two countries, made these statements in the council of ministers after the signing of the agreements, which took place last Tuesday in Washington, given the role of mediator that the United States played in the negotiations

In his speech, Rohani attacked “some states in the region” whose “leaders do not understand anything about religion and ignore their debt to the Palestinian nation.”

In early September, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei accused the UAE of “betray the muslim world […] to the Arab nations, to the countries of the region and to Palestine“By agreeing to normalize its relations with the Hebrew State.

In the same vein, the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, had spoken, who said in a statement that “There will be no peace, security or stability for anyone in the region without the end of the occupation and (without) respect for the full rights of the Palestinian people.”

“Attempts to elude the Palestinian people […] will have serious consequences, for which the United States and the Israeli occupation must take responsibility ”, the Palestinian president added Tuesday, without elaborating.

In the last weeks, Palestinians accused Emirates and Bahrain of betraying the “Arab consensus”, according to which there must be a resolution of the Israel-Palestine conflict before any normalization of relations with Israel.

In parallel, the terrorist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has launched numerous missiles toward southern Israel since Tuesday. One of them, which fell in the city of Ahsdod, caused two injuries. On Wednesday morning, the Israeli Air Force shelled targets in Gaza.

The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain are the third and fourth Arab countries to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, after Jordan (in 1994) and Egypt (in 1979).

At the same time, Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016while the United Arab Emirates saw their relations degraded amid growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic.

Sunni-ruled Bahrain has faced long-standing unrest among its large Shiite community fueled by Iran.

For his part, US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had more similar deals being negotiated by Washington between Israel and several other Arab countries, including Iran’s regional rival Saudi Arabia. “After decades of division and conflict, we mark the dawn of a new Middle East,” Trump said.
