Baghdad> Iraqi communist poet Muzaffar al-Nawab dies at 88 Born into a prominent family in Baghdad in 1934, Muzaffar al – Nawab was known from an early age for his critical poetry against Arab dictatorship.
After studying at the university, he worked as a teacher and was later fired for political reasons. He was forced to flee the country after the 1963 communist coup. He entered Iran and was deported back to Iraq by the Iranian secret police.
An Iraqi court has sentenced him to death by hanging for his poetry. Later reduced to life. Muzaffar al-Nawab, who escaped from prison through the tunnel, continued to operate in secret communist groups. He was in hiding for a good part of his life. He remained steadfast during his exile in Iran, Damascus, and Beirut.
Muzaffar al-Nawab, one of the most influential poets in Iraqi history, was known as the Revolutionary Poet. The first complete collection of Arabic language poetry was published by Dar Khanbar in 1996. Muzaffar al-Nawab last visited Iraq in 2011. Thousands attended the mourning procession, which began at the headquarters of the General Union of Literature and Books in Iraq.
