Syrian media reported that an “Israeli aggression” targeted the vicinity of the capital, Damascus, on Sunday night, adding that the Syrian air defenses intervened to respond.

Explosions were heard in the Syrian capital just before midnight local time (21:00 GMT).

The Syrian TV indicated that an Israeli “aggression” took place in the vicinity of Damascus. He said that the air defenses responded to “hostile targets” in the sky of the capital and its surroundings.

Local sources said that one of the sites targeted by the bombing was the Air Defense Battalion near the Hafir al-Tahta area.

The sources said that the Israeli bombardment consisted of two missile strikes, and that one of the missiles landed near Damascus airport.

The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted a military source as saying, “The Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points in the vicinity of Damascus,” adding, “Our air defenses intercepted the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them.”

The agency indicated that the bombing losses were limited to material.

This strike targeting Damascus is the first since late March, and Israeli raids on sites around the city of Aleppo on May 2 left 7 people dead.

Over the past years, Israel launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, targeting sites of the Syrian army and Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah targets, including weapons and ammunition depots in separate areas.

Israel rarely confirms carrying out strikes in Syria, but it repeats that it will continue to confront what it describes as Iran’s attempts to consolidate its military presence in Syria.

Syria has been witnessing a bloody conflict since 2011, which has killed about half a million people, caused massive damage to infrastructure, and led to the displacement of millions of people inside and outside the country.

On May 25, the Israeli army said in a statement that it had responded to shots fired from Syria at a reconnaissance drone.

The army added, “The Israeli army’s machine gun fire was directed at the area from which the gunshots were launched, and the drone successfully completed its mission without causing any damage.”
