Israeli researchers have developed an invisible face mask that protects its user from coronavirus, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), influenza and other respiratory viruses, the Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) announced Thursday.

This new mask is a form of air curtain flowing in front of the user’s face and mounted on a visored headgear, produced by a lightweight, reusable unit including a filter, Technion explained.

This air curtain protects the eyes, nose and mouth while allowing facial and emotional recognition as well as oral communication.

Researchers have successfully tested this new technology, revealing effective blocking of tiny droplets formed during breathing and speaking, as well as large droplets emitted during coughing or sneezing.

In addition, when the user is in a contaminated area, the air curtain eliminates projections from in front of the face by an “erosion” process.

Interviews conducted by the researchers with dozens of people in nursing homes, universities, shops and offices clearly revealed the benefits of this invisible mask, according to Technion.
