“It has become more and more difficult for people in recent months”

A week ago, the Delhaize bakery located in the Blue Quarter of Hasselt, launched a new promotion. Breads that were not sold the day before are now offered to customers at half price. “It’s a test for now, to see if it works. Instead of €2.49, day-old loaves cost just €1.25,” explains Nancy Houtmeyers, who works in the store.

For the Delhaize employee, the difference is not significant from one day to the next, and it is possible to keep the bread much longer by freezing it.

Some bakeries are already using this system

In the Vangrootloon bakeries, this system has been in use for a year, as Jan Massa, marketing manager, explains: “We felt it was important that our branches always have fresh bread until closing time. But this had the consequence that there were always a lot of surpluses. In addition, over the past two years, we have noticed that customers are increasingly looking at price and considering promotions. This is how the idea was born to put the surpluses back in the store at a reduced price »

“It has become more and more difficult for people in recent months. We wanted to highlight our action and it’s a success, because these breads are in high demand,” he concludes.

L’option Too Good To Go

There remains the Too Good To Go option, which allows you to buy food at a lower price in a multitude of stores and restaurants in your neighborhood. “This summer, we saw a 20% increase in new users ordering packages within the 30-day window. This is remarkable growth,” said spokesperson Laurine Poortmans.
