It took a Netflix series to finally lure gamers to Cyberpunk 2077

Fallen somewhat into oblivion after a calamitous departure, Cyberpunk 2077 find colors on Steam. The Netflix series is no stranger to this.

Are we witnessing an unexpected renaissance? Almost two years after its chaotic launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is on the way to restoring its image – at least on the Steam platform. As pointed out by Benji-Sales in a tweet posted on September 25, 2022the ambitious RPG from CD Projekt Red had a more than encouraging week in terms of traffic.

Concretely, Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a daily increase in players connected simultaneously, with a peak that almost doubled between Monday (78,385) and Sunday (136,724). To these statistics, provided by Steamchartsadds a first place in the ranking of best sellers, ahead of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (pre-order) and Slime Rancher 2 (novelty).

Cyberpunk 2077 can say thanks to Netflix

Here is the evolution of the peak of connected players on Cyberpunk 2077during the week of September 19:

  • Monday, September 19: 78,385;
  • Tuesday September 20: 83,252 (+ 6% compared to the previous day);
  • Wednesday, September 21: 86,068 (+3%);
  • Thursday, September 22: 89,387 (+4%);
  • Friday, September 23: 96,558 (+8%);
  • Saturday September 24: 121,648 (+ 26%).
  • Sunday, September 25: 136,724 (+12%).

As can be seen on Steamcharts, Cyberpunk 2077 attracts an average of more than 32,000 people in the last 30 days, a level that it had not reached since… January 2021 (i.e. one month after its release). The observation also applies to the record peak: over the past month, Cyberpunk 2077 managed to bring together 136,724 players, its third best total. The rebound is real.

How can we explain this sudden resurgence of interest around Cyberpunk 2077which has been more talked about for its many bugs ? It is difficult not to find a correlation with the diffusion of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix since September 13. The anime series has pretty good press on Rotten Tomatoesand has even been applauded by creators like Hideo Kojima.

Perhaps many of them are getting back into Cyberpunk 2077 after having quickly abandoned it due to its technical problems. The concerned then discovered a game in a much better state – now rated as satisfactory by CD Projekt Red. Earlier this month, the Polish studio formalized the arrival ofan extension of Cyberpunk 2077 — another argument that can make you want to dive back into the twists and turns of Night City.

A similar phenomenon was observed for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The broadcast of the (successful) adaptation on Netflix had helped to boost traffic, as well as sales, when he didn’t really need it. The future will tell if the improvement in Cyberpunk 2077 will be confirmed over time, but it is already a positive signal for a game that has become a textbook case.
