End of reign for the Netherlands. After four consecutive coronations (Chantal Blaak in 2017, Anna van der Breggen in 2018, 2019 and 2020), the title of world champion in road cycling goes this year to the Italian Elisa Balsamo. The 23-year-old won between Antwerp and Louvain (157.7 kilometers), in Belgium, on Saturday September 25. In the sprint, she beat the Dutch Marianne Vos, 34 years old and triple world champion (2006, 2012 and 2013, 9 podiums in total). Poland’s Katarzyna Niewadoma finished third. Elisa Balsamo is the fifth Italian crowned world champion after Alessandra Cappellotto (1997), Marta Bastianelli (2007), Tatiana Guderzo (2009) and Giorgia Bronzini (2010 and 2011).
