Japan reopened its market to Paraguayan stevia

Asuncion, IP.- The Vice Minister of Economic Relations and Integration of the National Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rigoberto Gauto, received this Tuesday in audience the president of the American Federation of Stevia (FAS), Juan Carlos Fischer. On this occasion, they discussed the reopening of the Japanese market to Paraguayan stevia.

After the hearing, Vice Minister Gauto reported at a press conference that a Paraguayan delegation made up of representatives from the National Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Service for Quality and Plant and Seed Health (SENAVE) held meetings with the authorities of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF), on which occasion the decision was made to reopen the market for Paraguayan products after several years of closure.

In April, Japanese technicians will come to carry out the sanitary procedure for processing stevia, a preliminary step to granting the favorable course to open the Japanese market to national production.

For his part, the President of the FAS stated that the mission of the Japanese technicians in Paraguay is the next step, for the issuance of the opinion within a period of 35 to 40 days, which will grant our country the license for export.

The Japanese market will import all of the national production. It is estimated that the average will be 600 to 700 tons per year, which would generate revenues of between 1 million and 1.5 million dollars.

He explained that the yield productivity ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 tons per hectare, and that there are currently varieties that exceed 5,000 to 6,000 kilos per hectare.

Finally, Vice Minister Gauto said that they will use their best resources to ensure that Paraguayan stevia can be exported to the European market.
