OAKLAND — Finally, José Abreu hit a home run while wearing an Astros uniform.
Abreu’s shot in the eighth inning was one of seven home runs for the Astros in the Sunday’s 10-1 win over the A’s at the Oakland Coliseum. The loss capped a three-game sweep, and Houston is unbeaten in six meetings against Oakland this season.
Abreu didn’t just watch the ball fly once it left his bat. Instead, the Astros first baseman ran around the bases at a speed of 26.2 feet per second … and didn’t stop once he crossed home plate. The veteran kept running until he almost made it to the dugout, where he slid right in front of his happy teammates. Abreu covered the bases in 17.6 seconds, the second-fastest home run “jog” this year after a home run that went out of bounds.
To say that Abreu’s solo home run was immediate would be an understatement, as he ended the longest homerless streak of his career at 260 at-bats. Before Sunday, his last home run had been on September 13, 2022, as a member of the White Sox.
Abreu’s 51-game home run drought to start a season is the longest for him since he came to the majors. He didn’t chuck it until Game 21 of the 2017 season.
