For weeks, the police searched for the fleeing soldier. He had left the Bourg-Léopold military barracks on Monday, May 17, taking weapons with him. The fugitive had threatened to attack state structures, a mosque and several personalities, including the famous virologist Marc Van Ranst.
According to the federal prosecutor and the medical examiner, Jürgen Conings committed suicide with a gun.
A farewell in privacy
The funeral director made it known on behalf of the family that there would be no room or opportunity for certain groups to express political statements or demonstrate on Friday.
“This whole thing has already received enough media attention. The family wishes to be able to say goodbye to him in privacy. She realizes that there could be a strong media presence on Friday. She obviously cannot prevent it, but she urges us to keep the necessary distance and to show respect and serenity, ”concludes Maarten Stulens.
