Kerala heavy rain alert state on extreme alert 24hour control room opened for public | Heavy rain: Extremely vigilant state, 24-hour control room; Reserve measures are strong

Thiruvananthapuram: The state is on high alert as heavy rains have been warned. At a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary yesterday, it was directed to strengthen the reserve measures. A 24-hour control room has been opened to the public. People can contact the control room by calling the toll free number 1077. The Met Department has forecast heavy rains till Monday.

The Orange Alert was issued on May 15 in six districts today. Orange Alert for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki. Yellow alerts have been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

A 24-hour control room will be opened on district and taluk basis. The control room will also be set up under the leadership of the Local Self Government Department. A special control room has been set up at the Corporation to monitor the floods in Kochi following heavy rains. The meeting also directed to ensure that the big pumps in Alappuzha are operational. It was also decided to take steps to ensure the safety of Sabarimala pilgrims.

The Chief Secretary directed that people should be evacuated from the landslide and flood prone areas and camps should be started if necessary.

The high-level meeting was attended by heads of various departments, police and fire chiefs, KSEB chairman, meteorological and disaster management experts and various district collectors. Police and firefighters were instructed to deal with any situation following the heavy rains. It has also directed to deploy civil defense officers if required.
